Be involved in the community 3.4 - Part 4

I was approached by Kirsty Stober, informing that she was hosting an event on the 6th of April showcasing Afro-Caribbean businesses that reside in Birmingham. I took this as an opportunity to delve into the community and have my first appearance as an independent retailer. To prepare for this event, I made 5 baby hats in 3 colours. Although it sounds like I made a few items, these items took a long time to prepare. It allowed me to understand the speed of the business and understanding what I can make. I also made a pair of booties. The event itself required promoting, and I had to advertise it to friends and family. On the contrary, I did not invite them because I knew it was not my best work, and it was not something I wanted them to see.

For this event, I also had to consider how I wanted the table to be set up, which is something I had never had thought about until a week before the event. I was under-prepared for the event, and it showed. Now I know what I need to do for future events.

The Curl Culture as a whole was successful. Many people came to see the other stalls that were present, and I was surprised to see that there were people that were interested in the products I had on sale. It reassured me that I was marketing to the right audience. For the event, I had to pay £20 to sell my items. I sold a baby hat and a pair of booties, which for me is a small victory. I sold the baby hat for £5 and the booties for £3.50. I sold them for low prices because I was starting out, and the wool I used was acrylic, and it did not seem right to sell it for a high price.

I now know, that acrylic is a ball of wool I do not want to use, however since I have leftover yarn and 14 baby hats I have decided to make as many baby hats as possible with my yarn and donate them to the children's hospital. As it is unsure if babies are allergic to wool or cotton this is the best substitute.

Here are a couple of pictures from the event:
